Santa Barbara is not a resort strip. It is a private reserve of scrub, salt flats and low limestone hills on the quiet end of the island, roughly 25-30 minutes from Willemstad. Rooms and Suites

Sandals splits its inventory into three service tiers — Luxury, Club and Butler Elite — and the difference between them here is bigger than at most resorts.

Luxury and Club rooms

The entry categories, Subi Premium and Carisia Luxury, are large, contemporary rooms in the Dutch-Caribbean style the resort uses throughout: white walls, dark timber, gabled rooflines borrowed from Willemstad’s landhuizen. They are perfectly good rooms. What you do not get is a butler, an included MINI Cooper day, or priority anything.

Club-level categories — Sunchi Beachside, Melemele and the various Carisia and Subi Club variants — add access to the Club Sandals lounge, a dedicated concierge and better positioning. If you are booking the middle of the range, the Sunchi Beachside categories are the ones worth chasing: they sit low and close to the water rather than up the hill.

Butler suites and bungalows

This is where the resort earns its reputation. The Awa Seaside Butler Bungalows are the signature — freestanding units with private infinity pools angled straight at the Caribbean, and the most photographed Sandals category built since 2020. The Kurason Island Bungalows are the quirkier alternative: they ring a shared pool with a heart-shaped island in the middle, which is either the most romantic thing you have ever seen or exactly not your thing. There is no middle ground.

Above those sit the Amante One-Bedroom Oceanview Butler Suites, some with swim-up access and wraparound balconies, and at the top the two-story Kurason Penthouse suites. If your budget stretches to it, an Awa Seaside Butler Bungalow is the reason to come to this resort rather than a cheaper Sandals in Jamaica. If it does not, book a Sunchi Beachside Club room and spend the difference on a dive package and a rental car. Do not book a hill-side garden category expecting a sea view — several categories look out over the reserve and, in places, toward Nieuwpoort’s port infrastructure.

Food and Dining

There is no buffet-first setup here. All eight restaurants are à la carte, with no per-week limits and no reservations required at most venues — a meaningful advantage over the Mexican and Dominican resorts that ration à-la-carte dinners.

Three beachside food trucks fill the gaps: Toteki for traditional Curaçaoan plates, La Palma for Spanish tapas and Kishi for Asian bites. They are open through the afternoon and are the honest answer to “where do I eat at 3pm.”

Food quality verdict

Strong, and better than the Sandals average — Vincent and Gatsu Gatsu in particular are restaurants you would be happy to pay for. The weak point is consistency at breakfast and lunch, where the à-la-carte model means slower service at peak times. Butler guests get reservations arranged; everyone else should turn up early or late at Butch’s and Vincent, which fill first.

Beach and Pools

The beach

Be clear-eyed about this. The beach at Santa Barbara is engineered: roughly 600 feet of imported sand laid along a sheltered inlet, with a dock separating sections of it. The water is calm, shallow and clear, and it is genuinely pleasant for swimming and paddling. It is not a broad natural Caribbean strand you can walk for a mile, and reviewers who arrived expecting one have said so plainly since the resort opened.

What compensates is what is under the water. Curaçao is a shore-diving island with fringing reef close in, and the snorkeling straight off the resort’s water sports dock is better than the beach itself suggests. Take the boat dives.

Pools

The centerpiece is a two-level infinity pool stepping down toward the sea with a swim-up bar on the main level. There is a separate quiet pool by the Sunchi building with its own bar for guests who want the adult version of adults-only. Beyond those, the pool story is really about private water: the Awa bungalows’ individual infinity pools and the Kurason bungalows’ shared heart-shaped-island pool.

Activities and Entertainment

Daytime

Included: PADI scuba diving (two-tank boat dives for certified divers, resort courses for beginners), snorkeling, kayaking, paddleboarding, Hobie Cat sailing, tennis, pickleball, and the fitness center. The dive program here is among the strongest in the Sandals portfolio, second only to Grenada, and it is the single best reason to choose Curaçao over another Sandals island.

The MINI Cooper program is the other differentiator. Included days on upper suite categories (and purchasable on lower ones) let you drive to Playa Kenepa, Playa Porto Mari, Shete Boka National Park or Willemstad’s Handelskade waterfront under your own steam. On an island this rewarding to explore, that matters more than another swim-up bar.

Golf sits next door at the Pete Dye-designed Old Quarry course. What is included varies by booking and category, and published information is inconsistent — assume carts, club rental and transfers are chargeable and confirm the exact terms with Sandals before you book.

Evening

Low-key by Caribbean standards. Live music, a piano bar feel at Kanaal, occasional beach parties and themed nights — no forced-participation animation team, no theater show. That is the correct call for an adults-only property, but if you want a resort with a nightly production show, this is not it. The Island Inclusive dine-out program lets qualifying guests (butler-level suites on stays of seven nights or more, and Diamond-level returning guests) eat at partner restaurants around the island with transfers included; terms change, so verify at booking.

Sandals direct usually wins on the big promotional sales and is the only channel for the honeymoon and anniversary add-ons.
