Henry Morgan is laid out in low blocks between the beach and the tropical gardens behind, in a rustic Caribbean style — wooden accents, turquoise, orange and blue walls, white interiors. Almost every room has a private balcony or terrace, and hammocks on the balconies are a signature. Rooms include flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges and air conditioning.

This is the part of the resort where the price shows. Across recent guest reviews the single most consistent theme is that the rooms are tired: worn furnishings, dated bathrooms, patchy maintenance. Some blocks have been refreshed and some have not, and which one you land in has a big effect on your impression of the resort. It is worth asking at booking which rooms have been most recently renovated, and worth being polite but persistent at check-in if you land somewhere rough.

Standard Rooms (from about $185/night for two)

The core Hotel Room runs roughly 383 square feet, sleeping up to four (maximum three adults), with a balcony and garden or pool outlook. The site’s own naming is a maze — Single, Double, Superior, Garden Room, Super Saver Garden Room, Poolside, Pool Garden Room in king and double configurations — but in practice these are variations of the same 430-square-foot-or-so garden-facing product with different bed setups and price points. The Super Saver Garden Room is exactly what the name implies: the cheapest inventory, furthest from the water.

Beachside Rooms and Suites (from about $240/night for two)

The Beachside Hotel Room is roughly 377 square feet, sleeps two adults plus one child, and puts you in the front blocks facing the sea. It is a slightly smaller footprint than the garden rooms for a higher price, and it is still the category we would pay for — on a property where the rooms are the weak point, being 30 seconds from the sand with a hammock and a sea view changes the value equation. The resort also lists Suites, Family Rooms and Beachfront categories for larger parties.

Our Pick

Take the Beachside Hotel Room if you can. The premium over a garden category is modest and it buys you the resort’s actual asset: the beach. For families, the Family Room is the sensible choice; for groups watching every dollar, the Super Saver Garden Room does the job as long as you understand you are buying a bed, not a view. Whatever you book, request a recently renovated block and a location away from the main bar and stage if you are a light sleeper.

Food and Dining

Two restaurants and five bars sounds generous. In practice, one restaurant and three bars are included.

Barbanera — The Buffet (Included)

Barbanera is the main building buffet and the heart of the resort’s food operation: Caribbean and international cooking, breakfast 07:00-09:30, lunch 12:30-14:30, dinner 18:30-20:30, casual dress. Reviewers generally rate it as the resort’s strongest feature — the Honduran and Caribbean dishes are better than the international ones, the fresh fruit is excellent, and it handles a full house of 238 rooms efficiently. The recurring criticism, and it is fair, is variety: on a week’s stay the rotation gets familiar, and the à-la-carte alternative costs money.

Note the fixed windows. Miss dinner service at 20:30 and your only option is the beach snack bar’s earlier hours or paying at Gula. This is a fully scheduled resort, not a graze-whenever operation.

Gula — Beachside À La Carte (Surcharge)

Gula is the resort’s gastrobar on the beach, serving Italian and Caribbean dishes a la carte from 12:00-15:00 and 19:00-22:00, with a wine cellar attached. It is the nicest place to eat on the property and it is charged separately from the all-inclusive plan. Budget one or two dinners here across a week if you want a break from the buffet; it is not expensive by resort standards, but it is not free either, and it should not be a reason you choose Henry Morgan over a resort that includes its a la carte venues.

Bars and Drinks

Five bars, three of them included:

• Main Bar (main building, 09:00-23:00) — the workhorse, and the only long-hours option.
• Playa Bar (beach, 11:00-13:00 and 15:00-17:00) — beachside service in two short windows.
• Snack Bar (near beach, 11:00-13:00 and 15:00-17:00) — the between-meals food option.
• Wine Bar (main building) — surcharge.
• The Winery (reception, 06:00-23:00) — surcharge.

The all-inclusive plan covers house-brand alcoholic drinks and soft drinks. That means local rum, local beer, standard mixers and cocktails made with well spirits — no premium labels. The Winery’s long 06:00-23:00 hours are tempting but it is a paid venue. Food Quality Verdict

Fine, and priced accordingly. The buffet is competent and the Caribbean dishes are the ones to eat; the drinks are basic but plentiful; the service is friendly and stretched. Where Henry Morgan loses points is structural rather than culinary — one included venue and two surcharged bars mean a chunk of the property is off-limits on the plan you paid for. Set the expectation now and you will enjoy the week; expect a Mexican-style multi-restaurant all-inclusive and you will be disappointed.

Beach and Pools

The Beach

The location is the entire argument for this resort. West Bay Beach is the finest stretch of sand in Honduras — soft white sand, warm shallow turquoise water, palms for shade — and the Mesoamerican Reef comes close enough to shore that you can walk in with a mask and be over live coral within minutes. Henry Morgan has direct frontage with loungers and sun shades, and the beach here is genuinely swimmable rather than a photo-only strip.

Two honest points. West Bay is a public beach with a busy walking path, so you will encounter vendors and day visitors; and on cruise-ship port days the beach and the snorkeling entries fill up with passengers bused over from Mahogany Bay and Coxen Hole between roughly 10:00 and 16:00. Snorkel early. Sand flies are a West Bay reality — bring repellent and use it on your feet and ankles at dawn and dusk.

Pools

Two outdoor pools, one of them a dedicated children’s pool, both surrounded by loungers and sun shades. They are conventional resort pools rather than design features — no lagoon, no swim-up bar, no waterslides — and they get busy at midday when the beach heat peaks. Activities and Entertainment

Daytime

For a budget resort, the daily program is surprisingly full, and the schedule is published rather than improvised: hiking at 10:00, a “crazy cocktail” session at 11:00, aqua gym at 11:30, a dance lesson at noon, beach volleyball at 15:30, cocktails at 16:00, a second aqua gym at 16:00, and Zumba-style aerobics at 16:30. Add kayaks, walking tours and fitness classes, plus the 24-hour gym (17+) and the on-site dive shop, and there is more structure here than at most properties in this price band.

Diving and Snorkeling

There is a full-service dive shop on site with easy access to more than 30 Mesoamerican Reef sites and excellent shore snorkeling directly off the beach — you do not need a boat to see coral here, which is a genuine budget advantage. Diving is not included in the all-inclusive rate; it is booked and paid for separately. For casual divers and first-timers doing a Discover Scuba session, this is perfectly adequate. Serious divers who want three boat dives a day built into the rate should look at Turquoise Bay on the northeast shore, or Fantasy Island if they want a private-island dive base near French Harbour.

Evening

Nightly shows start around 21:30 and rotate through the week — Garifuna cultural performances, fire shows and dance shows are the regulars. Honduras adds 15% sales tax plus a 4% tourism tax — 19% in total — and Roatán properties vary in whether that is baked into the headline number, so check whether your quote is gross or net. Take normal precautions: use the room safe, do not leave valuables on the sand, take a taxi rather than walking the beach path between West Bay and West End after dark, and use ATMs inside businesses. How far is the resort from the airport and from West End?

Juan Manuel Gálvez International Airport (RTB) is about 20 minutes away by road.
