Moon Palace The Grand – Punta Cana
By All-Inclusive Guide Editorial Team
Research & Editorial Desk · October 2026 · How we review
Moon Palace The Grand – Punta Cana is open and taking guests, and on paper it is the most complete family mega-resort in the Punta Cana area: a water park, a two-floor kids club, family suites for seven, 16 restaurants and a golf course, 20 to 30 minutes from the airport. But it opened on June 1, 2026 with construction still under way, and the first four months of guest reviews split sharply between delight and frustration over noise, reservations and service. Our 7.4 is provisional. Families flexible on dates should wait until 2027 for the build-out to finish; anyone booking now should go in expecting a resort still settling in.
On this page
Moon Palace The Grand – Punta Cana is the first Palace Resorts property in the Dominican Republic and the biggest all-inclusive to open in the Caribbean this year. It began taking guests on June 1, 2026. It has 2,171 suites in two 18-story towers, more than 20 places to eat and drink, nine pools, a water park, a Greg Norman golf course and an O Spa.
This is an early look, not a stay review. Nobody from this site has stayed at the resort. What follows is built from Palace’s own resort pages and press releases, from Caribbean Journal’s opening coverage, and from the first four months of guest reviews on Tripadvisor and Booking.com, all checked on October 3, 2026. Where a fact couldn’t be confirmed, we say so. We’ll re-score the resort once it has a full season of reviews behind it and the build-out is finished.
The early verdict: worth watching, not yet a sure thing
The resort has all the parts for a big family holiday. The open question is how well they work together yet.
Who should book now: families and multi-generational groups who want a lot to do in one place, need connected rooms for six or seven, and can live with some rough edges. Golfers who want a course on site also fit.
Who should wait: anyone whose trip depends on things running smoothly, including honeymooners, first-time all-inclusive guests and light sleepers. So should anyone who can easily move their dates into 2027.
Provisional score: 7.4/10. That’s slightly below our Moon Palace The Grand Cancún score of 7.8. Cancún has years of guest reports behind it. Punta Cana has four months, and they’re split.
Is it actually open? What “open” means in October 2026
Yes. It’s open and you can book it, but it isn’t finished.
- Palace’s own timeline: reservations opened on December 17, 2025, for a debut Palace called “Spring 2026”. Caribbean Journal then reported the opening date as June 1, 2026. In late August, the same outlet reported the resort as “now open” and published live sample rates.
- Guests are staying: by October 3, 2026, the Tripadvisor listing had 438 reviews with stays from June to October 2026. Booking.com showed 23 verified reviews.
- Construction is still going on: a June reviewer wrote that the resort is under construction and that guests are told before they arrive. A September reviewer still described it as “beautiful and very clean, even though it is still under construction.” July reviews mention amenities that weren’t open yet and only a few restaurants working.
- Fewer rooms on sale than the headline: the headline figure is 2,171 suites, but Expedia lists 1,662 rooms and Air Canada Vacations lists 1,678. That points to a phased opening. This is our reading of the listings; Palace hasn’t published a phasing plan.
- Mixed signals on the casino: the official resort FAQ describes a full casino on site. Air Canada Vacations lists the casino as coming by mid-January 2027. If you’re going partly for the casino, ask the resort first.
What to do about it: ask Palace which tower your room category is in, and whether construction is still going on near it. Ask them to note on your reservation that you want a room away from any work zone.
Where it is: Macao, not Bávaro and not Cap Cana
“Punta Cana” covers about 30 miles of coast, so the exact spot matters. The official address is Boulevard Turístico del Este, No. 74, Km. 28, Macao. That puts it on the Macao stretch north of Bávaro and Arena Gorda; Booking.com puts Arena Gorda beach 3.9 km away. Uvero Alto lies further north, and gated Cap Cana is well to the south of the airport.
| Moon Palace The Grand – Punta Cana | What that means | |
|---|---|---|
| Area | Macao (Km 28, Boulevard Turístico del Este) | Quieter than Bávaro’s dense hotel strip; Hard Rock Punta Cana and Dreams Macao Beach are on the same stretch |
| Airport (PUJ) | 28–29 km; “20 to 30 minutes” per Caribbean Journal | Similar to Hard Rock (about 30 min); noticeably shorter than Nickelodeon in Uvero Alto (about 45 min) |
| Free transfers | Shared round trip to and from PUJ on direct bookings of 4+ nights | Maximum of two free transfers per room; a third person in the room pays |
| Beach | Atlantic-facing, reached by elevated walkways through preserved mangrove | Expect Atlantic surf and sargassum risk in summer (see below) |
Beach caveat: this beach has no track record yet. On the Atlantic coast, sargassum seaweed is usually worst from about May to October. Waves on the Macao stretch can also be lively for small children. Our Dreams Macao Beach review covers the same stretch of coast. For a winter trip, see our guide to the best time to visit Punta Cana.
Who the resort is really built for
Families with young children
This is where Palace has put most of its effort. The official kids page lists:
- a pirate-themed Playroom on two floors
- a water park with slides, a lazy river and a surf simulator
- The Dreamery, a kids’ fun zone with games and treats
- Wonderwoods, a restaurant just for kids
- a baby purée menu made without salt or seasoning
- O Princess, a parent-and-child spa experience that costs extra
Under Palace’s current “Kids & Teens Stay Free” offer, guests aged 17 and under stay and eat free when sharing a room with a paying adult. That excludes December 23, 2026 to January 2, 2027.
We couldn’t confirm the Playroom’s age groups for this resort. Ask before you book if you have a toddler.
Teens
The Wired arcade and games lounge, the Ninth Pin bowling alley, League’s sports bar and the surf simulator give teenagers a real reason to leave the room. Most Punta Cana family resorts in this price range don’t offer this much for teens.
Multi-generational groups
Grand Family Suites are two connected rooms of 1,292 to 1,981 sq ft, with one king and two queen beds, for up to seven people. For bigger groups, Caribbean Journal reports three- and four-bedroom villas, the largest being a 10,946 sq ft rooftop residence for up to 12. Two towers with elevators also suit grandparents better than a sprawling low-rise campus.
Couples
They can make it work, but this isn’t really a couples resort. Palace points couples to its adults-only areas, the O Spa and the Grand Swim-Up Suite with its double Jacuzzi. Even so, the resort’s size and family focus are the point. Couples who want quiet will do better at one of the adults-only resorts in our Punta Cana guide.
What the rate covers, and where the money goes on top
Palace’s FAQ says the rate includes:
- all 16 restaurants
- premium drinks at every bar
- 24-hour room service, ordered through the Palace Resorts app
- a minibar restocked daily
- Wi-Fi and gratuities
- the water park, kids’ club, nightly entertainment, and all nine pools and beach areas
The same FAQ says some spa treatments, casino gaming and “select à la carte add-ons” cost extra.
| Usually included | Expect to pay extra |
|---|---|
| All 16 restaurants, cafés and snack bars | Most spa treatments (O Spa) |
| Premium drinks, minibar, room service | Golf: Air Canada Vacations lists a $90 per person cart fee per round |
| Water park, Playroom, Wired arcade, bowling | O Princess kids’ spa experience |
| Non-motorized water sports (kayak, paddleboard, snorkeling) | Tours, romantic dinners, salon services |
| Gratuities, Wi-Fi | Casino gaming |
How the resort credit actually works
Palace sells hard on “Resort Credit”. In October 2026, the direct-booking offer included $250 in Resort Credit on stays of four nights or more. A $1,500 credit applies to Presidential and Governor Suite bookings. The offer’s small print sets the real value:
- A 16% service fee applies to anything paid with credit. You must pay it in cash or by card; credit can’t cover it. If the fee is worked out on the full $250, that’s about $40 of real money.
- Spa use is capped at $82. That’s a share of one treatment, not a free massage.
- Only some things qualify: selected tours, romantic dinners, spa and salon services, and golf at selected clubs.
- Use it or lose it: credit is valid only during that stay. It can’t be carried forward or exchanged for cash.
- Offers don’t stack: if your booking qualifies for more than one credit offer, you get only the biggest one.
How to think about it: the credit is a discount on extras you were going to buy anyway. If you’d never pay for golf, a tour or a private dinner, it’s worth close to nothing. Compare the cash price of the whole stay across Palace direct, Booking.com and a package before you let the credit decide for you. The headline offer has also changed: in late August it was up to 25% off plus $500 credit. In October it was up to 20% off plus $250.
A note on membership sales
The resort’s footer links to Palace Elite, Palace’s membership program. Our Cancún review describes guests there being approached repeatedly with sales pitches. We haven’t seen enough Punta Cana reports to say whether the same happens here. You never need to attend a presentation to receive what you paid for.
Living in a two-tower resort: elevators, boardwalks and dinner reservations
Most Punta Cana mega-resorts are spread across low-rise blocks, with trams or long walks between them. Palace built upwards instead: two 18-story towers. According to Palace, the vertical design saved more than 228,000 square meters of natural vegetation, including about 400 meters of coastal mangrove. Elevated walkways cross the mangrove down to the beach.
What that probably means day to day (an inference from the design, not something we’ve tested):
- Elevators, not trams. Peak times, like the rush to breakfast, the pool in the morning and dinner, are when waits for elevators in a tall tower build up. Ask for a lower floor if you’ll be going back and forth with small children.
- A walk to the sand. The boardwalk through the mangrove is one of the resort’s best features (it’s in our photo above). It also means the beach is a walk away, not right outside the lobby. If you need to be on the sand straight away, a ground-level Swim-Up Suite or a lower floor nearer the beach path is worth asking about.
- Dinner reservations need a plan. A June guest wrote that dinner reservations were hard to get, with only late slots available. That’s common at a newly opened resort where some kitchens aren’t open yet. Find out on arrival how reservations work. Book your must-try restaurants for the whole stay on day one, and fit the buffet (Casa Macao) and Camino Street around them.
- Expect early teething problems. Several reviews from June to September describe slow check-ins, billing mistakes (one September golfer reported being overcharged by about $200) and mix-ups with spa bookings. Check your bill before you check out.
Choosing your room: golf view, ocean view, swim-up or family suite
Every category has both “golf view” and “ocean view” versions. View is the real choice you’re making.
| Category (official) | Size | Sleeps | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grand Superior Deluxe Golf View | 635–840 sq ft | 5 (5th on a rollaway, child) | Value-first families; golf views face inland |
| Grand Superior Deluxe Ocean View | 635–807 sq ft | 5 | Most couples; includes whirlpool tub |
| Grand Junior Golf View Suite | 775–1,012 sq ft | 5 | More space, cheaper than ocean view; lowest published sample rate |
| Grand Swim-Up Suite | 635–807 sq ft | 5 | Couples and celebrations; double Jacuzzi, ocean views |
| Grand Family Ocean View / Golf View Suite | 1,292–1,981 sq ft | 7 | Two connected rooms; the resort’s best family buy |
| Grand Governor Ocean View Suite | 1,981–2,637 sq ft | 5 | Top-tier, qualifies for $1,500 credit offer |
| Grand Presidential Ocean View Suite | 1,981–2,637 sq ft | 7 | Large groups wanting suite-level space |
Our pick (provisional): for families, the Grand Family Ocean View Suite, if it costs less than two separate rooms on your dates. It gives you two connected rooms instead of a rollaway bed. For couples, the Grand Superior Deluxe Ocean View gets you the view and the whirlpool tub without paying the swim-up premium.
What’s on the restaurant list, and what we can’t judge yet
Palace’s restaurant page names 16 restaurants and buffets, plus cafés and snack bars:
- À la carte: La Cantina (Mexican), Fuego by The Grilling Bastards (smokehouse), Carvao (Brazilian rodizio), Le Jiraf (French bistro), Nikos by Athinagoras Kostakos (Greek), Tavola (Italian trattoria), Habibi (Middle Eastern mezze), Jade (Japanese izakaya), Agra (Indian), Teppan by Momo (hibachi), Madremía (Latin American), Joe’s Deck (seafood)
- Buffets and casual: Casa Macao (breakfast, lunch and dinner buffet with live stations), The Grand Buffet (poolside breakfast and lunch), Camino Street (a street-food alley with six counters)
- Kids: Wonderwoods
- Cafés and snacks: Nativo Casa de Tueste (coffee roastery), Boulangerie (24 hours), League’s (sports bar), The Ninth Pin (at the bowling alley), 19th Hole (golf course views), Snack Bar
It’s too early to say which restaurants are consistently good. Agra, Jade, Habibi, Carvao and Madremía are the names that come up most in positive early reviews. Most of those reviews praise particular servers rather than the cooking. Expect the list to settle as more kitchens open.
Moon Palace Punta Cana vs Moon Palace Cancún
Both resorts sell the same idea: a huge family resort with the facilities of a small city, all included. They aren’t the same product, though.
| The Grand – Punta Cana | The Grand – Cancún | |
|---|---|---|
| Opened | June 1, 2026 (still being finished) | Established, years of reviews |
| Size | 2,171 suites in two 18-story towers | 1,304 rooms at The Grand, inside a 3,300+ room complex |
| Airport | 20–30 min from PUJ | About 10 min from CUN |
| Golf | 18 holes, Greg Norman Eco Signature | 27 holes, Jack Nicklaus Signature |
| Spa | O Spa | Awe Spa |
| Water park | Slides, lazy river, surf simulator | FlowRider, wave pool, lazy river |
| Layout | Vertical; elevators and boardwalks | Sprawling; some rooms far from amenities |
| Our score | 7.4 (provisional) | 7.8 |
Pick Cancún if you want a known quantity and a ten-minute transfer. Pick Punta Cana if you want everything brand new, more ocean-view rooms, family suites for seven, and a Dominican Republic beach. You’ll also need to accept a resort still finding its feet.
Against the Punta Cana family resorts we already cover
| Resort | Area | Why you’d choose it instead |
|---|---|---|
| Hard Rock Punta Cana | Macao | The established Macao mega-resort, with a Nicklaus course, a large water park and a working casino; usually cheaper (from about $308 a night) |
| Dreams Macao Beach | Macao | Smaller and simpler, with a strong beach reputation, at a fraction of the price |
| Nickelodeon Punta Cana | Uvero Alto | Character-led fun for younger kids; longer transfer (about 45 min) |
| Royalton Splash Punta Cana | Bávaro area | Water-park-first and much cheaper, with fewer extras |
| Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana | Cap Cana | The polished, upmarket family option, with calmer water and years of consistent reviews |
The closest match is Hard Rock, a few kilometers away. It has golf, a water park, a casino and a similar scale. Moon Palace has the newer rooms, more space for teens and connected family suites. Hard Rock has a proven track record and lower prices. More options are in our best Punta Cana water-park resorts guide.
Prices seen so far, and when to book
We haven’t taken a live quote. These are the published figures:
- Caribbean Journal (August 25, 2026), average nightly rates for August 29 to September 3: Grand Junior Suite Golf View $667, Grand Superior Deluxe $848, Grand Swim-Up Suite $1,106, Grand Governor Suite $1,698.
- Palace direct (October 2026): the fall offer gives up to 20% off (up to 25% with flights included), $250 credit, free stays for kids and teens and free airport transfers. Book by October 31, 2026 for stays until December 23, 2026. A separate offer gives the 5th night free on stays of five nights or more.
- Cancellation terms vary by date and rate. Notice periods range from 72 hours to 30 days before arrival, and the “Pay in Full Now & Save” rate is non-refundable.
When to book: if you can wait, the first months of 2027 are the obvious target. The Atlantic coast is usually at its best in winter. The casino is also reported to open by mid-January, and the build-out should be further along by then. Note that the kids-stay-free offer doesn’t apply from December 23, 2026 to January 2, 2027. Families going over the holidays should price children separately.
Where to book: compare the full cash price on Palace’s official site with Booking.com and package sites. Booking direct usually gets you the resort credit and free transfers. A third-party price may still come out cheaper overall once you value the credit honestly.
What guests are saying four months in
On October 3, 2026, Tripadvisor showed 4.3 out of 5 from 438 reviews, ranked #48 of 171 Punta Cana hotels. Booking.com showed 8.4 from 23 reviews. The overall average hides a split:
- 317 “Excellent” reviews against 46 “Terrible”, with relatively few in between.
- The sub-scores show where the problems are: Rooms 4.1 and Location 4.3, but Service 3.7, Cleanliness 3.8 and Value 3.5.
- Positive reviews keep naming individual servers and restaurants, plus the pools and the scale of the place.
- Negative reviews cluster around construction noise, slow check-in, billing mistakes, spa booking errors and dinner reservations, mostly in June and July.
Our reading: the rooms and the setting seem to be delivering, while operations aren’t there yet. That’s typical of a 2,000-room resort in its first season. It’s also the reason our score is provisional.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Moon Palace The Grand Punta Cana open?
Yes. It opened to guests on June 1, 2026, and is taking bookings for 2026 and 2027. Construction was still going on when guests stayed in September 2026, and the room count on sale is below the 2,171 headline. Ask the resort what will still be closed on your dates.
Is Moon Palace Punta Cana in Bávaro or Cap Cana?
Neither. It’s in Macao, at Km 28 on the Boulevard Turístico del Este, north of Bávaro and Arena Gorda. It’s 20 to 30 minutes from Punta Cana International Airport. Cap Cana is south of the airport.
Is golf included at Moon Palace Punta Cana?
Not entirely. The resort has its own 18-hole Greg Norman Eco Signature course. Air Canada Vacations lists golf packages with a $90 per person cart fee per round, and Palace’s resort credit can be used for golf. Confirm green fees and cart fees with Palace before you go.
Is the resort credit worth it?
Only if you’d spend money on spa, golf, tours or private dinners anyway. A 16% service fee applies to anything paid with credit, spa use is capped at $82, and unused credit is lost when you check out. Treat it as a discount on extras, not as cash.
Do kids stay free?
Under Palace’s current offer, yes: children and teens aged 0 to 17 stay and eat free when sharing a room with a paying adult. The offer excludes December 23, 2026 to January 2, 2027, and room occupancy limits still apply.
Should I book now or wait?
If your dates are flexible, wait for 2027. The beach season is better, the build-out should be further along, and there’ll be more reviews to go on. If you book for late 2026, ask for a room away from any work zone. Plan your restaurant reservations on day one, and check your bill before checkout.
How this early look was researched
We checked these facts on October 3, 2026: Palace’s official resort pages (overview and FAQ, accommodations, restaurants, kids, all-inclusive and offer terms), The Palace Company press releases from July and December 2025, Caribbean Journal’s April and August 2026 coverage, tour-operator listings from Air Canada Vacations and Expedia, and the review totals on Tripadvisor and Booking.com. We didn’t take a live price quote, and nobody from this site has stayed at or inspected the resort. Our score is provisional and will be revised.
