Shortlist SLS Playa Mujeres if a dedicated teen hangout, contemporary styling and an entertainment-led resort appeal more. These are recommendations based on the facilities and policies each hotel publishes, not a claim that we have personally stayed at both.

Both welcome families. The useful comparison is the room and package your household would actually book, rather than the cheapest room shown for two adults. This guide focuses on that choice; our Playa Mujeres destination guide covers the wider area.

Younger children: start with the childcare rules

Finest’s official children’s programme makes an important distinction: children aged 0–2 need their parents at Mini Club. Its Imagine Lounge offers breakfast and dinner childcare for registered, potty-trained children aged three and up, with a 90-minute maximum.

That makes Finest our first option for parents of a qualifying three-year-old who would value an occasional meal together. It does not mean unlimited babysitting or a drop-off nursery for babies. Ask about registration and availability before making an adult-only dinner the centrepiece of your trip.

At SLS, Coati Kids Club serves ages 4–12. For a family with a younger child, the practical question is how much time everyone wants to spend together and whether paid childcare is part of the budget. A club advertised as included will not solve the problem if your child is too young to attend.

For children who are old enough at either hotel, look beyond the age cutoff. A shy child who prefers to stay with a parent may get more value from the room and pools than from a long activity list.

Teens and days around the pool

SLS publishes a dedicated Teen Lounge for ages 12–17, with games and organised activities. It also places its splash zone alongside the family pool. That combination earns it a place on our shortlist for families balancing a teenager’s independence with a younger sibling’s pool time. See the SLS family facilities for the programme.

Finest’s current fact sheet also lists a teen lounge, so this is not a choice between a hotel with teen facilities and one without them. Ask each resort for the schedule during your dates, especially if meeting other teenagers is the main attraction.

Treat the water facilities at both as part of a family resort holiday. If your child pictures an entire day of repeated big-slide rides, compare the actual attractions with our Mexico water-park resort guide before deciding. Pool count alone tells you little about whether your child will enjoy the pool they can use.

Family rooms: a bedroom door can beat a better view

Finest’s Family Suite includes a separate bedroom for children. This is the room type to price if bedtime separation matters. Do not assume every suite at Finest has that layout: “Family Suite” is a specific category.

SLS advertises Family Style Swim-Out accommodation connecting two ground-floor rooms. That deserves a separate quote rather than comparison with one entry room. Read our SLS Playa Mujeres review for the broader resort overview, then confirm the exact layout with the hotel.

Before paying, put the proposed sleeping arrangement on paper. Where do the children sleep? Can adults talk after bedtime without sitting in the bathroom? Is the connecting configuration guaranteed in the booked category or merely requested? For a family travelling with grandparents, two usable rooms may be more valuable than a premium club badge.

Direct pool access also deserves thought with small children. Ask about the route from the room to the water and the door arrangement; do not treat a swim-out as a substitute for supervision.

Food, drinks and the extras that change the price

SLS includes meals, drinks and in-room dining, but its detailed inclusions page separately lists premium spirits, childcare, transportation, cabanas and spa services among paid additions. The headline all-inclusive promise should therefore not be read as every bottle, service or experience being covered.

Finest’s August 2026 fact sheet includes international premium and domestic alcoholic drinks and 24-hour room service. It also distinguishes club dining access. That is a package comparison, not evidence that one kitchen tastes better than the other; we would not choose a food-quality winner from hotel marketing alone.

Make a shortlist of the things you will actually order or use. If a particular spirit, a special dinner or a cabana matters, ask whether it is included in your quote. Compare total stay costs once those answers are clear.

SLS Elite vs Finest Club: different reasons to upgrade

The current SLS Elite benefits centre on butler assistance, private check-in, preferred pool and beach areas, and a hydrotherapy session. The page does not currently promise premium spirits or airport transfers as universal Elite benefits. Do not carry benefits from an old review into a new booking without checking the offer.

Finest Club is the all-ages upgrade at Finest. Excellence Club is its 18-plus category, with dedicated areas and club benefits. It is still part of Finest Playa Mujeres; choosing it does not turn the entire property into an adults-only resort. The hotel’s fact sheet sets out the distinction.

For either upgrade, work out the extra cost for the whole stay. Pay for something you will use daily, such as a preferred area or useful assistance, rather than for a longer list of benefits you are unlikely to notice.

Our booking decision

Start with Finest when a separate children’s bedroom and childcare eligibility solve real problems for your household. Start with SLS when your family is more interested in its teen programme and entertainment offering. Neither conclusion requires claiming one beach is always calmer or one resort always has better service.

If the quotes are close, let the exact room decide. If the quotes are far apart, identify what the higher price buys before paying it. A suitable standard room plus money left for the rest of the trip can be a better decision than an upgrade that fails to solve your family’s main need.
